Stars are awarded based on points scored in four assessment boxes: Adult Occupant Protection, Child Occupant Protection, Pedestrian Protection and Safety Assist. Details on how individual boxes are assessed are listed in their respective Assessment Protocols which can be found on Euro NCAP’s website. A vehicle’s score from each box is then divided by the total amount of points available in that box (represented as a percentage) then normalised using weight factors. Weight factors reflect the relative importance of these boxes and can be updated over time as emphasis shifts between them. Weight factors for the next several years are listed in the table below.
Once weight factors are applied, scores from the four boxes are compared against the thresholds required for a given star rating (known as balance criteria). Thresholds of these balance criteria for the next few years are listed below.
