iPhone sleep health test takes minutes

Optalert is proud to introduce Owl Eye. A breakthrough in sleep science, Owl Eye provides reliable, accurate testing for signs of sleep issues within minutes.

Sleep health testing at-home

Owl Eye has been developed to help people with sleep issues find valuable information that helps them improve their sleep health and lead fuller lives. It sets a new standard for what can be captured with a simple consumer device. Despite being so simple, the underlying algorithm has an astonishing accuracy of 96.6%. This surpasses leading smartwatch tests for sleep issues, which rely on measurement of nocturnal movements using accelerometers over multiple nights.

Designed for simplicity and accessibility, Owl Eye only requires an Apple iPhone and a well-lit room to perform the test. When the test begins, a circle appears on the screen, every few seconds flickering to become either a diamond or square. You simply count the number of diamonds that appear. After a few minutes, the app shows your result and lists recommended next steps if you think you might have a sleep issue.

“Wearable and app-based technologies are transforming how we approach sleep, and brain health more generally. These technologies provide continuous, personalised data that helps in identifying sleep issues, and thereby promote treatments of underlying conditions that affect the brain.”

– Prof. Matthew Kiernan AM,
CEO Neuroscience Research Australia

It’s what’s happening under the hood that’s truly revolutionary. Using the front-facing camera, Owl Eye is capturing every micro-movement of the eyelid – every twitch, every blink, every flutter. These movements are analysed for 64 mathematical parameters by a proprietary algorithm, measuring the subtle impairment in eyelid movement that arises from sleep issues. Your results are shown immediately when you finish the test. To protect your privacy, the video itself is discarded and only the eyelid data is retained.

The Owl Eye app also features 92 articles from the Sleep Health Foundation, all reviewed by medical professionals. To top it off, the app lists a range of products for better sleep health.

Approximately one in five Australians are estimated to be affected by a major sleep disorder, which is estimated to cost $56.5 billion annually.[1] Consequently, increased awareness of sleep health is vital to the health of Australians and our economy.

A proven track record for innovation

The underlying technology is based on data collected at three leading sleep laboratories: Monash Medical Centre, the Monash Biomedicine Discovery Institute, and the Institute for Breathing and Sleep (IBAS). Owl Eye builds on Optalert’s previous work in developing the Johns Drowsiness Scale (JDS) – a biomarker that quantifies impairment due to drowsiness via eyelid movements. The JDS is in use in sleep laboratories around the world and in widespread use in commercial fleet management, helping to protect drivers against accidents and injuries resulting from fatigue.

Like the JDS, we are confident Owl Eye will be a transformative technology that contributes to our mission of helping millions of people live longer, healthier lives – all in the blink of an eye.
