Murray began his journey as a geologist, but his insatiable curiosity and desire to make a difference led him to pursue medicine. After completing his clinical training and earning a Ph.D. in Sleep Medicine, he dedicated himself to research in Australia, the USA, and the UK and, later, clinical practice in Australia. His contributions to the field were monumental and in 1988, he went on to establish the Epworth Sleep Centre.

Murray’s concern for public safety led him to delve into the dangers of drowsy driving. After years of meticulous research, he founded Optalert, a company dedicated to developing and commercialising impairment monitoring technology. This has saved thousands of lives to date and continues to do so.

Beyond these professional achievements, Murray was an esteemed member of the Australasian Sleep Association, from which he received a Distinguished Achievement Award in 2020. He served as an Adjunct Professor at the School of Life and Social Sciences, Swinburne University of Technology and was made a Fellow of the University by Monash University in 2024, both in Melbourne. His passions extended beyond the realm of medicine, with a keen interest in maritime history and fondness for a hit of tennis.

Murray’s legacy will forever be remembered by the impact he has made on so many. Our team at Optalert are committed to carrying on his vision to improve health and safety via the field he invented: blepharometry, the study of eyelid movements.

During this difficult time, we extend our condolences to his family, especially his loving wife, Penelope, his two daughters, and his six grandchildren. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to them for being a part of what energised Murray and allowed us to benefit from his brilliance and passion.
