We now know what the four boxes are and what is required to score highly in them. However, what happens if a vehicle excels in only 2 of the 4 boxes? Is that sufficient to get it a high overall rating?
Before a final overall rating is provided, several modifiers are also applied. To start, if a vehicle performs well in all boxes but has a red rated region (see Assessment Protocols), its star rating is capped at 4 stars.
Ratings are also restricted if a vehicle performs inadequately in a single category. In this example (showing actual box and final star ratings of a vehicle from Euro NCAP), while the Adult Occupant Protection as well as Child Occupant Protection boxes achieved 4-stars and the Pedestrian Protection box achieved a 3-star rating based on 2021 balance criteria thresholds, the Safety Assist category only achieved 2 stars, leading to the vehicle’s rating being restricted to just 2 stars. Hence, vehicles need to perform well in all four categories for it to achieve high star ratings.
