Introduction

Drowsiness is the intermediate scale between alert wakefulness and sleep, the importance of which is highlighted by the worldwide problem of drowsy driving. We describe here a new scale, the Johns Drowsiness Scale (JSD), and its validation as a continuous measure of drowsiness that impairs performance in active people. It is based on a new system of infrared reflectance oculography (Optalert™).
