Fatigue Monitoring System-How does it work

The Optalert™ solution encompasses a Driver’s Device and a Monitoring Reports Service.

The Driver's Device

Optalert™ Driver’s Device is as a personal safety device for drivers. It includes a pair of innovative glasses connected to a Vehicle System. The glasses look and feel like an ordinary, stylish pair of sunglasses, but their frames house cutting-edge technology which use pulses of invisible light to measure eye and eyelid movement.

The Vehicle System processes all the information obtained from the glasses. Based on Optalert’s patented algorithm the data is analysed to determine the driver’s level of drowsiness.

Visual and audio warnings are triggered as soon as the driver shows signs of drowsiness. This allows the driver to take suitable precautionary measures, potentially saving lives and millions of dollars.

Optalert Vehicle System contains the following components:

The processor

The processor is the information hub of the system and processes all the data obtained from the Optalert glasses. The data is analysed to determine the driver’s level of drowsiness using Optalert’s patented algorithm. Warnings are triggered as soon as the driver shows signs of drowsiness.

The connection point

The connection point is where the driver plugs the Optalert glasses into the Optalert Vehicle System. It allows multi-positioning for driver comfort and includes a quick release system in case of an emergency.

Visual indicator

The Optalert system gives drivers minute by minute information on their level of drowsiness and their risk of a drowsy crash. The driver’s fluctuating alertness level is displayed as a score from 0 to 10 (JDS score). The higher the score the more drowsy the driver is.  The indicator also shows the risk of a drowsy crash (low, medium, high) at the time.

With the aim to have a low JDS score, a driver can  plan their journey more safely by having additional control over how they manage their fatigue.

As not to distract the drivers from the road, the indicator is passive unless the driver is entering a risky drowsiness event. If the driver wishes to check their JDS score, they simply need to wave their finger over the indicator to illuminate the display.  The indicator brightness is automatically adjusted for day and night operation.

The JDS score displayed on the indicator consists of three risk signals:

1. Green: Low Risk (Normal)
2. Yellow: Medium Risk (Caution)
3. Red:  High Risk (Critical)

The speaker

The speaker provides the driver with audible beeps and voice messages, such as "Caution, you are showing signs of drowsiness". Warnings are played at between 95 and 120 decibels (depending on the environment) to allow the driver to hear them clearly, even in loud industrial environments.

Optalert Monitoring Reports Service

An optional service, the Optalert Reports program creates a variety of reports from information gathered from the driver, their glasses and the Johns Drowsiness Scale.

Reports such as activity summaries and detailed vehicle logs provide invaluable information for risk management analysis.

The Optalert Reports Program can also be used as a database to manage all Optalert installations and users.
